The Rangel affair should have been a moment for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to show she won't tolerate unethical behavior in Washington. She should have been leading the parade to make Rangel step aside at Ways and Means. But she didn't lead; she was led.

She defended Rangel, even as he grew more obstreperous, even as he blamed his staff — and the ethics committee — for his troubles.

Some rank-and-file Democrats came to understand that they couldn't defend Rangel. They came to understand that they were defending exactly the kind of Washington entitlement and arrogance that has left people in the rest of the country so angry and disillusioned and disconnected from the political class.

Some Democrats understand that. Their leader, their speaker — it's still not clear she understands that at all.
