SHARE 59 CONNECT 36 TWEET COMMENTEMAILMORE More than 300 passengers and crew on the Celebrity Summit have been hit with a stomach bug identified as norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The ship is on a two-week Canada/New England sailing, which embarked from Bayonne, N.J., on Sept. 21 and is due to return there on Saturday. In response to the outbreak which the CDC said affected 14.5% of passengers and 1.5% of crew onboard a beefed up cleaning and disinfection plan has been put in place on the ship. The CDC is also working with the cruise line on how to deal with “active cases” and cleansing procedures for when the ship returns to Bayonne. Through its Vessel Sanitation Program, the CDC said it would send an epidemiologist and an environmental health officer to meet the ship and do a health assessment, as well as to monitor sanitation procedures. The predominant symptoms of the gastrointestinal illness are vomiting and diarrhea. “Those affected by the short-lived illness have responded well to over-the-counter medication being administered onboard the ship,” said Celebrity Cruises spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez. “At Celebrity Cruises we have high health standards for all our guests and crew. During the sailing, we are taking a number of steps to prevent the transmission of the illness, including implementing enhanced cleaning procedures and protocols, and using special cleaning products and disinfectants that are proven to kill norovirus to clean throughout the ship.

Celebrity Silhouette Cruise Review by seafarernc

This cruise itinerary is fairly port intensive with only one sea day but the ports of call are all unique and interesting and I would not trade any for an additional sea day. We did a mix of Celebrity shore excursions for some ports and did others on our own. I think all of the ports are doable on your own if you so desire. My first suggestion is not to miss the sail aways especially from Venice, Split, Kotor, and Malta. If you have a balcony stateroom as we did it is convenient to watch the sail away from your own room however you miss half the panorama of leaving. We would position ourselves in the outdoor cafe or bar at the rear of the ship and enjoy the complete experience as we were leaving which was even more enjoyable with some wine and snacks. My next suggestion is to venture outside the main port of call on shore days. I would recommend going to Trogir while in Split, Perast while in Kotor, and Mdina while in Malta for a more complete experience. You can do this on shore excursions but they are close enough that you can go by taxi or bus on your own. There are other interesting places in addition to these but for historical significance these were our favorites. I recommend doing the cablecar in Dubrovnik for a panoramic view and to get an overview of the walled city. I would recommend doing it early rather than later so as to avoid the crowds and heat later in the day.
